History teachers will want to encourage some of their students to take part in an all-Ireland essay or project competition organised by the two schools of history and the school of education at TCD. There are three categories, which are open to all full-time second-level students in the Republic and in Northern Ireland.
The junior category is up to Junior Cert/ 1st to 3rd form; a middle category is up to Transition Year/GCSE and a senior category is up to Leaving Cert/A Level. The competition, sponsored by The Irish Times , the Four Courts Press and History Ireland, seeks essays on either of two topic areas, European history or local history studies.
Teachers are asked not to submit class projects. The number of entries is limited to six per school. Medals, which will be awarded to the first and second prizewinner in each category, have been specially commissioned.
Entry forms are available from the secretary at the Department of Medieval History, TCD. There is no entry fee. An entry form together with the completed project/essay must be returned on or before Monday, April 19th, to Schools Prize in History, Education Department, 3087 Arts Building, Trinity College, Dublin 2.
