Only one in 10 prisoners in Dublin's Mountjoy jail has had any schooling beyond the age of 16, the Minister of State for Local Development, Mr Gay Mitchell, said at the opening of a pre school in Cramlia.
He said this statistic and the fact that three quarters of all prisoners came from five deprived areas of Dublin showed "an inexorable link between lawlessness and inadequate education for young people."
