European Central Bank (ECB) president-designate Jean-Claude Trichet has said he would try to uphold the legacy of a credible euro left by predecessor Mr Wim Duisenberg.

Speaking yesterday, shortly after euro zone leaders officially appointed him to head the ECB for eight years from November 1st, Mr Trichet told reporters: "There is a legacy that I hope to maintain intact.

"My excellent predecessor Wim Duisenberg led a credible euro and led also a good team which is working together efficiently as has been demonstrated by what we've been doing when we introduced the euro notes."
