The environmental pressure group Voice is helping to stage a series of events throughout Ireland, North and South, to mark Earth Week, which is a global effort to promote better care of the planet. It runs until April 25th.

The Earth Day Ritual of Respect is the highlight; a service in Dublin's Iveagh Gardens where representatives of religious groups will declare their respect for fellow-citizens and the Earth. It takes place on Thursday, which is UN Earth Day.

Some of the other events are:

Practical conservation in Belfast, Coleraine, Derry, Enniskillen and north Down; various events from today, organised by Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland (CVNI). Information at tel: (0801232) 645169.

Today: "Making the Most of Materials" exhibition all week at Castletymon Library, Tallaght, Dublin, beside the National Basketball Arena (9.45 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Thursday; 9.45 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., Friday and Saturday).

Thursday, April 22nd: Earth Day Ritual of Respect for the Earth. (12.30 p.m.) at Iveagh Gardens at rear of National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2. Also access from Harcourt Street via Clonmel Street.

Senior class pupils at Scoil Eoghain, Moville, Co Donegal, are holding a Meditation on the Sacredness of Creation ceremony at noon.

Saturday, April 24th: Experience Lough Derg with Nenagh Boat Club, focusing on water quality; catchments and zebra mussels (11.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.) at Dromineer, Co Tipperary.

Sunday, April 25th: Wilderness Walk with Cairde Bhride (4 p.m.), meet at Brigid's Well, Tully, Co Kildare.
