Limerick County Council has dropped an application for a landfill site at the scenic Slieve Felim area on the Limerick-Tipperary border. However, the council stressed that it reserved the right to revive the application in the future in relation to the site in the townlands of Buffanoky and Forkeala.

The council decided not to proceed after the Environmental Protection Agency requested further technical information.

A spokesman for the council said yesterday that they did not have the technical staff at present to provide the information and address the issues. "We would have had to provide a lot more information," he said.

The original landfill application was made to the EPA in May 1997, but was delayed by an application to the High Court for a judicial review.
