A Dublin man is due to appear in a Greek court today charged with the importation of nearly four tonnes of cannabis near Athens in 1997.

Tommy Savage, a former INLA member and convicted bank robber, was one of the first Irish citizens to be arrested under a European warrant.

The charges against him stem from the testimony of another man alleged to have been involved in the plot.

Savage denies the allegations and claims never to have been to Greece. He has dismissed his Greek counsel and will represent himself at the trial, claiming to be the victim of a frame-up.

He has been based in The Netherlands since the early 1990s and if convicted will face up to 20 years in prison.
