Heroin with a street value of about £175,000 has been seized in separate operations by Dublin gardai and Welsh police, who detained a Dublin man as he was about to board the Dun Laoghaire ferry at Holyhead on Saturday, writes Jim Cusack, Security Correspondent.Mr David Maguire (20), of St Ronan's Park, Clondalkin, was remanded in custody when he appeared before Llangefni Magistrates' Court in north Wales yesterday. He is charged with attempting to export a half-kilo of a Class A drug, namely heroin. The quantity of heroin which was seized had an estimated street value of £75,000 in Dublin, according to gardai.

In a separate operation, detectives from the Divisional Drugs Unit at Ballyfermot station are questioning a 24-year-old man and his girlfriend about the seizure on Monday of 8oz of uncut, or "rock", heroin with an estimated street value of £100,000. The heroin was found in a flat in the Drimnagh area. The man is being held under the Drug Trafficking Act, which permits detention for questioning for up to seven days without charge. His girlfriend was arrested in Ballyfermot yesterday afternoon.
