A 58-year-old man was killed yesterday and two passengers were seriously injured when the car he was driving struck a tree on the Granard road near Ballinagh in Co Cavan.

The dead man, who has not been named, was an Irishman on holidays from Britain. The two injured passengers, believed to be both women, were taken to Cavan General Hospital. No other vehicle was involved.
