A lorry driver from Co Louth was remanded for trial to Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday on charges of dangerous driving causing the death of a 12- year-old boy.

Gerard Bloomfield (45), Green Road, Drumiskin, appeared before a special sitting of Mallow District Court last month charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Billy Kelleher.

The truck driver was also charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm to Bill O'Flynn, who was a passenger in the car in which the boy died on February 20th.

Billy, from Ballinahina, Co Cork, was on the way back from a trip to a circus with his aunt and three young cousins when the accident occurred at Corrin in Fermoy.

Mr Bloomfield appeared before Mitchelstown District Court yesterday where he was formally remanded on his existing bail terms and conditions to appear in court in court in two weeks, on October 7th

Mr Bloomfield was informed that any major elements of his defence case, such as alibis, must be notified to the State within the next two weeks.

He will now face trial in Cork Circuit Criminal Court at the direction of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
