A truck carrying farm labourers plunged into a river in India today, killing at least 29 people, most of them women and children.

Local officials said at least 30 people were injured in the accident, which occurred in Madhya Pradesh state's southern district of Hoshangabad.

Officials said the truck driver had apparently lost control while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle. India has one of the worst traffic accident rates in the world.
