A food packaging firm in the Donegal Gaeltacht is to more than double its workforce as part of a multi-million euro expansion, it was announced today.

Some 70 new jobs will be rolled out over the next three years at RA Pacaisti Teo (RAP) in Gweedore's Gaoth Dobhair Business Park, which currently employs 54 people.

The €3.3 million expansion, supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta, will allow for a major expansion of the company's operations, which includes the launch of three new patented product lines.

Twenty-seven jobs will be in place by the end of next year.

John McDermott, Operations Director at RAP said he was delighted to have worked with Udaras na Gaeltachta to expand the Donegal facility.

"This investment will have significant long-term benefits for our operation in Donegal and further secure the existing employment at the facility," he said.

"Our decision was influenced by the company's positive experiences at the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park and we are delighted to be able to make this  announcement today."

Pádraig Ó hAoláin, chief executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta, said the announcement was welcome news at a time of difficult national and global economic conditions.

"This substantial investment is an endorsement of Udaras na Gaeltachta's strategy of supporting new and existing innovative enterprises, thereby developing the current employment base at The Gaoth Dobhair Business Park bringing the total number employed at the Business Park to over 750," he said.

RAP has its headquarters in London with sales, administration and production units in Ireland, UK, Korea, Malaysia and the US.

It also has agents distributing its products throughout continental Europe and has been operating in Gaoth Dobhair for 11 years.

In the last week 126 new jobs have been announced in four companies at the Business Park.
