Fears of having their practices disrupted by "hangers on" deter family doctors from getting involved in methadone treatment for heroin addicts according the Irish College of General Practitioners. Other deterrents, according to its magazine Forum, include fears of violence and problems with insurance. It urges the Minister for Health to consider a proposal that family doctors take turns at administering methadone at specialist centres.
