Madrid - A judge asked Spain's Supreme Court yesterday to decide whether there was sufficient evidence to charge the former prime minister, Mr Felipe Gonzalez, with involvement in a "dirty war" against Basque separatists in the 1980s.

Judge Baltasar Garzon, who has gained international fame for seeking the prosecution of former Chilean dictator, Gen Augusto Pinochet, asked the court to determine whether declassified security documents implicated Mr Gonzalez in the covert terror campaign.
