IT WILL cost Kerry County Council €10,000 to adjust road signs to take account of the finally agreed English and Irish names for the town of Dingle. The English name Dingle has been restored. The new Irish version is to be Daingean Uí Chúis.

The name An Daingean, introduced in 2004 for both Dingle and Daingean Uí Chúis, is contained in Section 191 of the Draft Local Government Bill expected to pass through the Oireachtas by the summer recess.

“Dingle” was painted and taped over by council workers when it was removed from existence in 2005 under the Placenames Order of the Official Languages Act. However, the change prompted a campaign to reinstate Dingle, along with the Irish version Daingean Uí Chúis.

Director of roads and transportation Charlie O’Sullivan said the English name could be restored relatively easily on road signs.

“However, the changing of the Irish name will require the replacement of all of the signs, and the estimated cost will be in the region of €10,000,” he said in a report to Cllr Michael Healy-Rae.
