British army bomb experts have declared a suspect device found at the offices of SDLP's Alex Attwood's Belfast headquarters to be a hoax.

The suspect device was discovered at Mr Attwood's constituency office on the Andersonstown Road in west Belfast.

The alert comes weeks after a bomb-type parcel, addressed to Mr Attwood, was delivered to the Northern Ireland Policing Board offices.

The SDLP man, who sits on the authority which holds chief constable Hugh Orde to account, has been one of the most vocal champions of the massive reforms to the police service.

A party spokeswoman said he would not be making any comment.
