Police in Co Derry dealt with three security alerts last night as the spate of pipe bomb discoveries across the county continued into the night.

In the past 24 hours the police and British army were called to 12 separate incidents in and around Coleraine, Maghera and Magherafelt. Two of the alerts were discovered to be what police describe as an "elaborate hoax" but ten devices were made safe.

Police believe at least two loyalist paramilitaries groups are behind the attacks that has caused traffic chaos in parts of Co Derry as roads were closed and checkpoints set up.

Bomb disposal experts made safe a pipe bomb near Kilreagh police station at 10.30 last night. At around the same time in Garvagh, a pipe bomb was made safe while another suspect device was declared a hoax at around midnight.
