Department head named

Mr Jimmy Farrelly has been appointed secretary of the Department of the Environment.

Mr Jimmy Farrelly has been appointed secretary of the Department of the Environment.

Mr Brendan O'Donoghue retires from the post on June 25th next.

Mr Farrelly was born in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny and educated at CBS Kilkenny and University College Dublin. He served for three years as First Secretary in the Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels and personnel officer and finance officer of the Department of the Environment.

He was assistant secretary of the Department of the Environment for 10 years, and is a member of the National Roads Authority and of the steering committee of the Dublin Transportation Office.

He is married with four children.
