The Government is unlikely to make any major changes to the White Paper on Defence despite a meeting yesterday between the Chief of Staff, Gen Dave Stapleton, and the Secretary General of the Department of Defence, Mr David O'Callaghan, writes Kevin Rafter.

Neither side was prepared to make any substantial comment following the meeting of the Strategic Management Committee of the Department of the Defence, which was also attended by the two deputy chiefs of staff and two assistant secretaries-general of the Department of Defence. A military spokesman would only say the process was "ongoing".
