A declaration of Independence, handwritten by Eamon de Valera almost 80 years ago, has been returned to Ireland for display in the National Museum.
The Declaration, which had been written in 1919 for circulation in the United States, was presented to Mr de Valera's granddaughter, the Minister for Arts, Culture, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Ms Sile de Valera, at a reception yesterday.
Experts believe the two-page document was written by Mr de Valera while he was imprisoned in Lincoln Jail.
It is dated January 21st, 1919, the day the first Dail met in Dublin.
