An explosion occurred at a chemicals and explosives plant 25 kilometres west of the Serbian capital Belgrade today.

State television said four people were killed. The Tanjug state news agency reported a number of people had been injured but gave no further details.

"All we know at the moment is that an explosion went off in the weapons plant of the Prva Iskra factory in Baric," a police spokeswoman said.

She said a fire had broken out and access to the site was difficult. The chemicals complex, censored repeatedly for emissions damaging to the surrounding environment, lies on the bank of the Sava River, which flows into the Danube at Belgrade.
