A woman (22) has been arrested in connection with an incident in Ennis, Co Clare in which a woman (23) sustained a number of stab wounds.

A woman has been arrested in connection with a stabbing on the grounds of a primary school in Ennis, Co Clare this evening.

The victim, a woman (23), is said to be in a "life threatening" condition following the incident, which occurred in the Station Road/Friar's Walk area of Ennis at about 5.05pm.

The woman was stabbed a number of times and was taken to the Midwestern Regional Hospital for treatment.

A second woman (22) was arrested in connection with the incident. She is being detained at Ennis Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A technical examination was being carried out at the scene by gardaí this evening.
