The Taoiseach has congratulated Peter Robinson after he replaced the Rev Ian Paisley as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party today.
In a statement, Mr Cowen said the new DUP leader would have his full support and co-operation “in working together for the common good and mutual benefit of all of the people of this island.”
Mr Cowen described Mr Robinson as a central figure in the recent enormous progress in Northern Ireland, and praised his role in devising the Programme for Government, Budget and Investment Strategy as Minister for Finance in the Northern Executive.
Mr Cowen said: “I wish Peter well in his new position. He is a person of immense ability who I am sure will relish the challenges ahead.”
The Taoiseach said Mr Robinson was taking over as DUP leader at a time of unprecedented opportunity for Northern Ireland, and that the Executive faces many challenges, including strengthening the economy and completing the process of devolution of policing and justice.
Mr Robinson is due to be named First Minister of the Executive on Thursday.
