Santiago - The Santiago Appeals Court yesterday decided to postpone a decision whether to drop charges against the former Chilean dictator, Gen Augusto Pinochet.

Charges that the ailing former dictator was an accessory to the murder or kidnappings of 75 political opponents in the month after his rise to power will be re-examined next week, said Judge Cornelio Villarroel, who is among those due to rule on a defence motion to drop the case based on Gen Pinochet's health problems.

The former dictator was admitted on Sunday to hospital for tests for blood pressure problems and then underwent a dental operation.

Gen Pinochet was indicted in January for his alleged role in the October 1973 military action known as the "Caravan of Death". They are among more than 250 complaints filed against him for alleged human rights abuses that took place during his 17-year regime.
