THE FINAL cost of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse may be more than €100 million, a note with yesterday’s report revealed.

The total cost of the commission up to April 30th was some €60.8 million. This included almost €18.5 million in legal costs for third parties.

Some 334 solicitors’ firms represented the witnesses before the investigation committee.

Witnesses included religious order representatives and survivors’ institutions.

Between €34 million and €44 million may be required to meet the remaining costs of the commission. The majority of these costs are expected to be third-party legal fees.

There was no legal representation allowed for witnesses who went before the confidential committee.

This private committee was for victims who wished to speak of their abuse but did not want it investigated by the commission.
