A Cork couple became engaged after learning they had shared in Wednesday's Lotto jackpot. Mr David Waldron, a research chemist at University College, Cork, proposed to Ms Noreen Power, who works in the Munster Literature Centre, within minutes of learning their ticket had won half of the £500,000 prize.

The couple decided to go public about their win to promote awareness of the eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa, from which Ms Power suffers. Both are involved in fundraising for a related charity, RP Ireland, and will be attending a meeting of the organisation in Dublin today.

The couple have chosen a Cork jeweller to supply the engagement ring.
