Moscow - The leader of Russia's communist party has called for the southern Russian town of Volgograd to be given back its old name Stalingrad in honour of the 1943 Soviet victory over the Germans there.

The 1942-43 battle of Stalingrad was a major second World War victory for the Soviets and one of the turning points in the struggle against the invading Germans.
