Industrial action by 40 ward clerks at University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) has been suspended this morning ahead of further talks between unions and the Western Health Board.
The work-to-rule would have seen the ward clerks initially refuse to answer phones in protest at the board's proposal to cut 169 jobs.
Talks between the unions and the health board will resume later this morning. Last week, four contract healthcare workers were rehired. The health board has also agreed to examine budgetary headings with the union to see where savings can be made.
The crisis over the cuts arose last month when the board told its members it could be forced to lay off 169 people to meet a levy of €1.15 million demanded by the Department of Health and Children.
The IMPACT and SIPTU unions have demanded that savings be made in other areas.
