There is widespread exploitation of Filipino workers in Ireland, according to Mr Don Brennock, PRO of the Filipino Irish Association.
Speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland, Mr Brennock said that up to 150 Filipinos working in the country have had contracts changed and salaries reduced on arrival into the State.
Some Filipino recruitment agencies charge workers up to £1,800 to set them up in jobs which in some cases, Mr Brennock claims pay less than the minimum wage.
Mr Brenock also said that many Filipino workers return home in debt after having borrowed large sums of money to pay Filipino agencies who are exploiting them.
The "vast majority" of Filipino workers’ contracts, Mr Brennock claims, are in breach of Irish labour legislation.
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment are looking into the claims and will issue a statement later on today.
