US Vice-President Dick Cheney was taken into Washington University Hospital last night following two short bouts of heart twinges after exercising, reports Patrick Smyth, in Washington.

Mr Cheney, who suffers from chronic heart disease, was described as stable. Doctors said that he had not had a heart attack and would probably return to work today.
