Two people were killed today when a car laden with explosives blew up in Yemen, where authorities have launched a US-backed purge on supporters of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

The incident comes less than a week after a Yemeni man threw a hand grenade at the wall of the US embassy in the capital Sanaa. There were no injuries in that attack on March 15th.

Authorities were investigating the car explosion, which took place on a road near al-Wark village, some 60 km north of the capital, the official Yemeni news agency Saba quoted a security source as saying.

It did not explain why the car was laden with explosives.

Saba said those killed were travelling in the car when it blew up. Four people travelling in a bus behind the car were injured.

Yemen has said up to 100 US military advisers will to the Arab state to train forces hunting al Qaeda members, although it has not said when they will arrive.
