a veteran peace campaigner, who is standing against Mr Blair in the general election, was yesterday jailed for three months by Harrogate magistrates for causing criminal damage at a US military base.

Helen John (63), a founder of the Greenham Common protest, cut a hole in the perimeter fence around Menwith Hill, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire, during a protest against the Americans' "Son of Star Wars" defence system.

But John, of Otley, West Yorkshire, a retired midwife who has been protesting since 1981, has vowed she will still stand against the Prime Minister in Sedgefield constituency.
