The National Youth Council of Ireland has called for research into drugs use in Ireland following a new survey, which showed that 44 per cent of young Europeans have experimented with illegal drugs. The survey, conducted by the music channel MTV in eight European countries, found that marijuana was the most popular drug, followed by ecstasy and speed.

The president of the council, Ms Jillian Hassett, said there was a need to know whether similar figures existed for Ireland.
