Cork Fire Brigade was called to the scene of up to 70 fires during bonfire night celebrations last night.

About 20 fires were extinguished due to safety concerns, a fire brigade spokesman said. Many of these were lit in unsuitable locations or near obstacles like overhead power lines.

Cork City Council organised five “family friendly” supervised fires around the city last night with music, facepainting and other services.

“It was quieter than last year,” the spokesman said. “Hopefully the community events will take over.”
