Britain rejects Zimbabwe presidential result

Britain has refused to recognise the result of Zimbabwe's elections won by President Mr Robert Mugabe.

Britain has refused to recognise the result of Zimbabwe's elections won by President Mr Robert Mugabe.

It said the vote had not been free and fair. "We do not recognise the result nor its legitimacy", Foreign Secretary Mr Jack Straw told parliament.

Mr Mugabe was officially declared re-elected as Zimbabwe's president yesterday after a controversial and hotly contested election.

Britain, Zimbabwe's former colonial master, had accused Mr Mugabe of a sustained campaign of violent intimidation.
