The US Supreme Court will have to decide in an appeal by the Boy Scouts of America whether they can exclude gay people from their ranks, writes Joe Carroll.

Their decision to lodge an appeal follows a ruling by the New Jersey Supreme Court that a ban on homosexuals is illegal under the state's anti-discrimination laws.
