A 32-year-old man who worked as a bouncer at an Ennis hotel received a four-month jail term and a €1,500 fine at Tulla District Court yesterday for assault.

Mr Ronan Considine (23), of St Joseph's Terrace, Clarecastle, told the court that David McGrath (32), Seehan, Gort, Co Galway, assaulted him in the gents' toilets of the West County Hotel, Ennis, after a function on March 24th last year.

Mr Considine admitted in court that he called McGrath a "prick" in the toilet before McGrath punched him a number of times and head-butted him. Mr Considine said McGrath then hit him several times while he was on the ground.

The court heard that Mr McGrath left the scene before Mr Considine was removed to Ennis hospital and gardaí arrived.

The judge acknowledged that McGrath had been provoked, but as a security man he was supposed to be above those situations. He ordered McGrath to do 120 hours' community service in lieu of the prison term.
