An American visitor told a court yesterday that an assault at a Cork lap-dancing club nearly two years ago left him incapacitated for more than nine months and had severe effects both mentally and physically on him.

Neville Barry, Washington Street, Cork, was found guilty yesterday at Cork Circuit Criminal Court of assaulting Mr Glen Kovak at Lapello's Nightclub, Phoenix Street, Cork, in the early hours of August 11th, 2001. Barry worked at the club as a bouncer.

Garda Sgt Declan O'Sullivan told the court that the American was on a social outing with two friends and during the evening, Mr Kovak saw one of his companions being manhandled by one of the bouncers.

"He went over to intervene in a peaceful manner but as a result was struck in the left eye by Neville Barry, who then stamped on his left leg, breaking it in two places," the detective sergeant said.

Mr Kovak told the court that the blow was like a karate kick to his leg.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin remanded Barry in custody for sentencing until tomorrow.
