Two bombs exploded outside police stations in Northern Ireland and an army bomb disposal squad disarmed a third unexploded device, police said today.

Two explosions were heard near Downpatrick police station in Co Down at around 10.50 p.m. Twenty minutes later another explosion was heard at nearby Ardglass police station.

No-one had claimed responsibility but Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said it suspected splinter groups of the IRA were behind the attacks.

PSNI Chief Inspector Jeffry Gamble described the incidents as reckless attacks.
