Boeing said it is to cut 5,000 jobs in its commercial division in 2003 due to the continuing downturn in the airline industry.
A spokesman said the company expects that over half of these cuts will come through natural attrition.
The world's biggest commercial aircraft maker said earlier this month it would make further cuts in its workforce next year, without specifying a figure.
Boeing said last year it would lay off 30,000 people in its commercial aircraft unit by the end of 2002 following the September 11th attacks and downturn in the economy which has hurt travel.
"We are on target to meet that reduction," a spokesman said today.
He added that the cuts announced today are in addition to the 1,200-1,500 job losses at the group's shared services division announced in October.
