The body of the Irish soldier killed in East Timor on Tuesday is expected to be brought back to Ireland tomorrow.

Pte Peadar Ó Flaithearta died after being shot in what the Army described as a tragic accident. It is understood that a fellow soldier discharged his weapon when both men were on patrol in a remote mountainous jungle near the border with West Timor. The Irish unit, which was based near the village of Taromon, was on a three-day patrol in the region.

Pte Ó Flaithearta's body was yesterday flown to Darwin, Australia, where a post-mortem was to be held this morning.

Plans were being made last night to transport the body to the family church at Trabane, near Lettermore, Co Galway, possibly by Air Corps helicopter. No funeral details were available yesterday.
