Chief UN arms inspector Dr Hans Blix received a letter from Iraq last night containing a report on the VX chemical agents it says it destroyed 12 years ago, Dr Blix's spokesman said.

The letter, sent by fax, was 25 pages long. "It was half in Arabic and half in English," spokesman Mr Ewen Buchanan said. "Some of it will need translation and then we will study its contents."

In Baghdad, a foreign ministry source said the report "contains the results of analyses on the quantities of chemical agents that were destroyed in 1991."

A diplomat in the Iraqi capital, speaking anonymously, said the report, titled 'Fate of VX and choline in soil,' would be followed by a second report to the United Nations on anthrax "in the next few days".
