Fines for road-traffic offences are to be substantially increased, in some cases trebled, in new legislation to be announced by the Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey, this morning, writes Alison O'Connor, Political Reporter.

The Road Traffic Bill, 2001, as well as increasing the amounts to be paid in fines by motorists, will also provide for a penalty points system for driving offences.
