Algiers - Tribal and village leaders of Algeria's ethnic Berbers yesterday dismissed an assertion that they had met the government and won a key demand - the officialisation of their language.

The government said on Wednesday that the minority leaders had met the head of government, Mr Ali Benflis, who told them that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika had decided to amend the constitution to give Tamazight equal status with Arabic.
