Belfast city councillors set to say Yes

Belfast City Council will vote tonight on the Belfast Agreement

Belfast City Council will vote tonight on the Belfast Agreement. Councillors will be asked to support an Alliance motion in favour of the document. The proposer, Mr Steve McBride, last night expressed confidence that "this time Belfast will say `Yes' ".

The leading advertising agency, Saatchi and Saatchi, which has given its services free, has designed posters to be used on billboards by the non-party political Yes campaign.

The posters will be unveiled outside Belfast City Hall today by the former Northern Ireland minister, Sir Richard Needham.

Meanwhile, the vice-chairman of the Ulster Unionist constituency association in West Tyrone has criticised the anti-agreement stance of the area's MP, Mr Willie Thompson. Mr Edward Turner claimed he was out of touch with grassroots feeling and had not discussed the matter with the association.

The DUP deputy leader has challenged the British Prime Minister to give voters in the North an alternative to the Belfast Agreement in the referendum. Mr Peter Robinson said that since Mr Blair had been asking if an alternative existed to the deal, the DUP was providing alternatives based on the devolution plans for Scotland and Wales and the strong local government system in England.

"We do not need to ask if these forms of government are acceptable to Mr Blair. They are. After all they are his policies," Mr Robinson said.
