The Belfast artist Tom Carr has died at the age of 89. He died at the home of one of his three daughters in Norwich. Mr Carr was best known as a water-colourist, although he also painted in oils.

He was based near Newcastle, Co Down, for many years and was inspired by the Northern landscape, particularly the Mournes and the Lagan valley. He also concentrated on family paintings. The Northern artist Neil Shawcross said Mr Carr was a great painter and draughtsman. "Dozens and dozens of landscape painters working in Ireland, and particularly in Ulster, were influenced by him," he told BBC Radio Ulster.

His biographer, political journalist Eamon Mallie, said Mr Carr in his family paintings had a great ability to capture the "gesture of the child in an inimitable fashion".
