The body of a baby girl who was found stabbed to death in a laneway 32 years ago may be exhumed from Glasnevin Cemetery, Dún Laoghaire Coroner's Court has heard.
Dublin County Coroner Dr Kieran Geraghty reopened the inquest into the infant's death last September after legal representations were made on behalf of a woman who came forward 11 years ago claiming to be the mother of the baby girl.
The coroner adjourned the inquest yesterday saying the case could not proceed until the DPP had submitted his report. "The question of an exhumation may have to be considered," he told the court. The inquest will resume on June 6th.
The infant's mother, previously named in court as Cynthia Owen, claimed the baby was one of two she gave birth to at a young age as a result of familial sexual abuse during the 1970s when she was living in Dalkey, south Dublin.
Speaking outside Dún Laoghaire courthouse yesterday, she said: "I'm very pleased to hear that the coroner is considering exhuming my daughter's remains at Glasnevin Cemetery." The body of the newborn baby was found wrapped in newspaper and a black plastic bag in Dún Laoghaire in 1973.
