Shots were fired as an armed gang got away with close to €80,000 in a raid on a security van in Bettystown, Co Meath yesterday.

The attack happened as security men were delivering cash to Donovan’s Supervalu just after 1pm.

One onlooker said: “The first security guy was barely out of the van when he was rushed by two men who seemed to come out of nowhere.

“I heard at least one shot, but I think it was aimed up in the air more than at the guy with the money.”

Laytown gardaí investigating the attack said: “One of the raiders was wearing a blue striped top and black bottoms, the second had a dark navy top and black bottoms.

The garda said that both raiders wore surgical gloves.

“One shot was discharged in the incident, but nobody was injured, both attackers made their escape on foot,” he said.
