Little Rock - A committee of the Arkansas Supreme Court filed suit yesterday to have President Bill Clinton disbarred as a lawyer for denying his sexual contact with former White House intern Ms Monica Lewinsky.

The action stems from Mr Clinton's deposition in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case in which he denied having had a sexual relationship with Ms Lewinsky.

A federal judge in the Jones case cited President Clinton last year for contempt of court over his denials, fined the President $90,000 and referred the case to the Arkansas Supreme Court's Committee on Professional Conduct. President Clinton's lawyer, Mr David Kendall, said the President would fight the suit. In its lawsuit, the committee charged that Mr Clinton's conduct "damages the legal profession and demonstrates a lack of overall fitness to hold a license to practice law".
