Gardaí in Co Westmeath have appealed to the public for assistance following a serious assault on a young girl on Sunday afternoon.

The assault happened in an open area where a number of children were playing close to the Ashe Road at around 3pm.

The man is described as being in his late teens or early twenties, of average height with a freckled or spotty face. He was wearing a grey tracksuit with a hooded top and black runners.

The exact age of the girl is not known, but it is understood she is in her pre-teenage years.

Anyone who may have been in the Ashe Road area and who saw this youth is asked to contact gardaí in Mullingar Garda station on 044 9384000 or the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111.
