A house fire in County Antrim has left a 12-year-old girl dead and four other children injured.

Two of the children, aged eight and 13 are critically injured and were being treated at the Antrim Area Hospital and another at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

A fifth child was being kept under observation at the Antrim Hospital.

The children were dragged from a blazing house outside Toomebridge, Co Antrim, by neighbours.

They were trying to resuscitate the youngsters when firemen arrived and took over.

A fire service spokesman said officers provided mouth to mouth resuscitation and heart massage until paramedics arrived.

The fire is believed to have started in the lounge of the house. Police said the cause would not be known until after a full examination of the scene tomorrow.
